Nokia Lumia 520: How to back up your phone

Lumia-520We’d venture to say that you’ll grow so attached to your Nokia Lumia 520 that you’ll soon be using it to pretty much run your life, which makes the prospect of losing or irreparably damaging it almost unthinkable. If you follow our guidance on how to back up your phone, you’ll be able to sleep easily at night.

Think about it. You can use your Nokia Lumia 520 as a personal organiser, a communications hub, a camera, a dictaphone, a note-taking tool, an ebook reader… we could go on.

All of these activities require data to be stored. Data that can be lost if you’re not careful.

Nokia Lumia 520: How to sync photos and videos from your computer

Fortunately, there are some easy-to-use back-up features built into your Nokia Lumia 520 with Windows Phone 8. Here’s how to make the most of them.

Start at the set-up

Good news – your Nokia Lumia 520 can be set to automatically back up your stuff straight from the set-up. When you sign in with your Microsoft account, turn on the service that sends your data to the cloud, ready to be restored.

Note that your Nokia Lumia 520 will only backup your data when connected to a Wi-Fi network in order to save your data plan.

Customise what gets saved

You’ll probably want to tweak and customise exactly what gets saved in this procedure. To do so, just go to Settings>backup. From here you can toggle the backup of the following elements on and off.

App list & settings

This includes your installed apps (though no individual app settings are preserved), your call history, your theme, your accounts, your IE favourites and general settings.

Text messages

Pretty self-explanatory. It’s worth noting that previously backed up messages won’t be deleted when you switch this feature off until you purposefully delete them.

Photos and video

As you may be aware, you can automatically upload photos and videos to SkyDrive, and this can be controlled from here. You can also change the quality of each item to save data and storage space.

If you’ve backed them up using the standard method here: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-gb/how-to/wp8/basics/back-up-my-stuff

Then you’ll find them on your SkyDrive account – simply log in from an computer or using the SkyDrive app on your Lumia. Hope that helps?

All Windows Phone come with 7GB of SkyDrive, this is the default backup location. You will need to access your MS account to set this up.

Where is it backed-up to on the cloud – can the data be viewed to check what’s there?
