Nokia Lumia owners now have Call and SMS Blocking with Windows Phone GDR2 update

nokia-call-sms-block-01Nokia as added Call and SMS Blocking to Nokia Lumia smartphones running the Windows Phone GDR2 update. It’s rolling out to Nokia Lumia 925 and Nokia Lumia 1020 owners presently and will come to the likes of the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 520 as part of the Nokia Amber update.

Windows Phone GDR2 (General Distribution Release 2) version 8.0.10327.77 or 8.0.10328.78, depending on your phone, brings with it a host of updates, such as FM Radio, improved Skype, enhanced Internet Explorer and even the ability to set your favourite camera Lens, such as Nokia Smart Camera, to automatically load when you launch the camera.

What to expect from the Nokia Amber update

Nokia Lumia has taken usability even further with a range of updates of its own that will become apparent for anyone owning a Nokia Lumia 925, which already has the Nokia Amber and will be rolling out to all Nokia Lumia running Windows Phone 8 smartphones in due course.

The latest enhancement has been the ability to block unwanted calls and SMS texts coming to your Nokia Lumia. A new update to the Extras+Info app that can be found in Settings is rolling out and adds a new section called Call+SMSĀ filter.

Call and SMS blocking is a feature that has been requested for some time as it allows you to block those annoying calls and texts sent out by spam services that seem to be the curse of modern telephony.

Before you can start to use Call and SMS blocking you’ll be asked to confirm that it’s OK for Nokia to can your incoming messages. It’s worth knowing that no information is actually sent to Nokia or any third-party, as the scanning merely looks at the number rather than the message.

You can add numbers to the blocked list using either the call history page or from the Messaging thread index page. To add a number, simply hold down on it until the pop-up asks you what you’d like to do, then simply opt for “block number…”. Whether you block from a text message or a call, once added the block applies to both contact methods.

The Advanced section allows even greater functionality, such as the ability to block withheld numbers, as well as get notifications about blocked calls and SMS. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the ability to add a Live Tile to your Start screen displaying the blocked calls and messages received.

The arrival of the Call and SMS blocking function on Nokia Lumia smartphones is a welcome addition and highlights how Nokia is working to make the Windows Phone platform as versatile an experience as possible.

As part of the Nokia Amber update we’ll also see features such as the Glance screen,Ā double-tap to wake and colour profiles appearing across the full range of Nokia Lumia devices.

Yes it is, we have it on our Nokia Lumia 625 – have you checked in Settings for an update if not already installed?

  • Morven Chalmers

Hi, I purchased the luima 925 yesterday here in the uk. is this available in the UK? thanks :)

  • Mikey_Bee

Sorry to hear that. The 822 isn’t a variant here in the UK so isn’t something we can check. Anyone able to help out a fellow NL 822 user?

  • Mikey_Bee

Yes you can buy the 925 and 920 in the US – you can’t buy the 928 here in the UK.

  • Bernard Ofori

The 928 came unlocked out of the box. The 920 & 925 aint a USA device?

  • Mikey_Bee

The Nokia Lumia 920 will get major updates as part of the Nokia Amber rollout. As the NL925 already has this update it has a slight step up advantage to the NL920.
We can’t comment on the 928 as that is a US device and not part of the UK portfolio so we’ve not used it.
